Royally Screwed (Royally, #1) by Emma Chase

Royally Screwed (Royally, #1) by Emma Chase
SUMMARY

Nicholas Arthur Frederick Edward Pembrook, Crowned Prince of Wessco, aka His Royal Hotness, is wickedly charming, devastatingly handsome, and unabashedly arrogant; hard not to be when people are constantly bowing down to you.

Then, one snowy night in Manhattan, the prince meets a dark haired beauty who doesn't bow down. Instead, she throws a pie in his face.

Nicholas wants to find out if she tastes as good as her pie, and this heir apparent is used to getting what he wants.

Dating a prince isn't what waitress Olivia Hammond ever imagined it would be.

There's a disapproving queen, a wildly inappropriate spare heir, relentless paparazzi, and brutal public scrutiny. While they've traded in horse drawn carriages for Rolls Royces, and haven't chopped anyone's head off lately, the royals are far from accepting of this commoner.

But to Olivia, Nicholas is worth it.

Nicholas grew up with the whole world watching, and now Marriage Watch is in full force. In the end, Nicholas has to decide who he is and, more importantly, who he wants to be: a King... or the man who gets to love Olivia forever.

MY REVIEW

I have never been to New York, but the ideal image of this city for me is the following:
A snowing day; a small coffee shop which sells tasty, handmade pies (maybe with a broken lock on the door which nobody bothers to change); the smell of the fresh coffee; hardly any person walking outside; and me sitting at the table closest to the window looking at the falling snow on the street and the skyscrapers’ lights. This is the real New York and I would like to experience it someday.

For Nicholas, New York means freedom, even if it is just for a little while. He knows anyway that “Royalty is forever”. You cannot escape the throne or responsibilities or an arranged marriage. One night soon after he has tried to drown his sorrows, a pie lands on his face. Somehow Nicholas has been talking without thinking.

For Olivia, New York means the place that she is not able to escape from, even if it is just for a little while. She knows that her family depends on her and “Family is forever”. She cannot escape the coffee shop that was her late mother’s dream or the expenses that comes with it or the duty and the dependability of a teenager sister and an alcoholic father. One night just before she is ready to collapse from her tiredness, some pompous, rude rich guy comes into her shop and insults her with his incidental proposals. One of her pies is her weapon of choice in order to defend herself.

The next day finds Nicholas feeling very very sorry and Olivia still thinking about him.

Nicholas is back and he is determined to show to her that besides being a good looking, rich and with an irresistible voice guy; he is also witty funny, clever, sensitive, good with unfortunate kids and crazy about her.

Plus, by the way, he is a prince. Which is NOT a particularly good thing. Before long, Olivia will find out that it is really hard to be a prince. And to have a brother who is a prince and who does not behave.

Anyhow, there is not really much resistance by either Nicholas or Olivia. Typical dialog:

“I want you”
“Have me”

No major conflicts. Not a big bad heartbreak.

And somewhere there the first part of the book finishes.

Bye, bye New York! Hello Wessco!

Olivia is officially invited to the palace to spend her summer and she is absolutely thrilled, until she meets the angry citizens, the rich and famous, the crazy ex girlfriend and the scary grandmother. Nicholas will also have his not so nice moments.

I wish we had more descriptions of this fictional country, but I am sure we will have plenty in the next books. The palace is well described and it must be amazing.

In a little while, there will be major conflicts and a big bad heartbreak. However, there is nothing that cannot be fixed – especially now that Olivia has found a new unexpected bestie.

And then there will be some more heartbreaking, because our Nicholas is keep having his asshole moments. Thank God his brother and his best friend will talk some sense into him.

A really feel good book, as sweet as a pie!
